The Effect of Social Media on Intimate Partner Violence
Problem Statement: Social media platforms, such as Facebook and Instagram, increase the risk of women, specifically younger women, to engage in violent intimate partner relationships. The different platforms of social media have created a space for intimate partner violence to be created or to continue.
Main Causal Points:
-
Gender constructs and standards presented on social media platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat.
-
Unrealistic standards and expectations set by society and amplified on social media, with the help of filters and editing, cause a women's looks to be one of her main values.
Relationship to Information: This problem represents how misinformation can rapidly spread and change the ideals and values of a person, based on misinformation. Social media amplifies the misinformation to younger audiences by misrepresenting what values/ideals each gender "should" have, such as the unrealistic beauty standards set for women or the toxic masculine ideals set for men, misrepresenting genders based off constructs set by society.
